Direction Based Communication
Based on the "direction" there are four types of communication. These are as follows:-
Upward Communication:-
It refers to the communication that flows from the lower level to the upper level of an organizational hierarchy. For instance, when an employee makes an appeal or a request or communicates thoughts to the superior, the flow of information is from bottom to top. this type of communication is called upward communication.
Downward Communication:-
It refers to the communication that flows from upward to the downward level of an organizational hierarchy. For example, when a supervisor gives orders and instructions to juniors, the flow of information is from up to down.
Horizontal Communication:-
This type of communication takes place among the members at the same level in the organization. For example, the production manager may communicate the marketing plan to the marketing manager. The flow of communication between the persons in the same positions. Horizontal communication often takes place among different departments in an organization.
Diagonal Communication:-
It refers to the communication that happens between persons in different departments and at the different positions of an organizational hierarchy. Diagonal communication takes place under special conditions. For example, when the head of a department at one branch of a bank communicates with a cashier of the other branch of the same bank.
